My first character online :)

It is done, I finished my first character for www.writeinchinese.com , a website which presents the writing and meaning of chinese characters. Greetings to Adam and a thank you for the work you have already done!

点 diǎn: o’clock

My first character is 点 diǎn, not a very complicated but a quite useful one. It means “o’clock” and is used as a measure word for hours. The full entry can be found at

Hope I can contribute a lot more soon. I think it will improve my GIMP knowledge a lot, nice side effect

Amazing! How can GIMP create those animations?
You don’t draw every frame by hand, do you?

Actually i do

It’s a little tricky, you start with the complete character and then duplicate the frame. In this copy you erase the last part of the last stroke, then duplicate this one again and so on. In the last frame will be an empty one. So actually it is done backwards through erasing instead of painting which would be quite difficult.

btw: this is an quite ugly one, after this one we found out how to create smooth looking beautiful ones
